MATH and GRAMMAR
Can you imagine life without math? No system of time…no system of measurement…no system of money…no numbers…no fun!
Can you imagine life without words? No means of communicating verbally…no books to read…no Bible…no way!
Both math and grammar reflect the incredible order of our Incredible God!
God has ordered everything in the universe according to precise mathematical calculations, from the number of chromosomes in a living thing to the angle at which the earth is tilted on its axis and everything in between. In flowers and pinecones are mathematical patterns (Fibonacci sequences). Music and art rely on mathematical proportions. Math is everywhere – business, science, grocery shopping, construction – you name it!
God has, from the beginning of time, used words to express His power. He spoke the word, and there was light! He had his people record history, prophecy, poetry and the like. Jesus, Himself, is referred to as “the Word.” Languages all follow general, predictable patterns (with a few exceptions, to keep things interesting!), and proper communication skills are absolutely essential to our information-driven society. Words can express emotion and encourage a response; they can be beautiful, ugly or just plain silly, depending on the situation – all kinds of words for all kinds of uses!
Here at LCS, we see both math and grammar as parts of God’s design and as subjects we work hard to master as we seek to serve our Master. We study arithmetic, geometry and algebra, with a little probability and logic thrown in now and then. We write sentences, paragraphs and essays, with some stories and poetry thrown in for good measure. We use formulas and tables, “shortcuts” and “scribbles.” We pick apart sentences, classify and diagram. Not knowing who’ll end up in engineering, nursing, education, masonry or driving a truck, we study a broad range of mathematical subjects and different styles of writing so that each of us is challenged. It’s all part of our exciting journey of education!
